2.6 Rectilinear Motion with Constant Acceleration

For motion in a straight line, called rectilinear motion, the displacement, velocity, and acceleration vectors all lie along the same line. Therefore, we need fine only the relation between x,v, and a treated as scalars. A negative value for x, v, or a will simply mean that the corresponding vector quantity points in the negative x direction. The sign does not depend on where the vector is but on the direction in which it is pointing.
